Facebook is cited to lead to the "complete destruction of Arab and Islamic society'' and is the cause of one out of five divorces in Muslim couples.

For the similar reason, one man's profile certainly does not appear on Facebook - Abd al-Hamid al-Atrash, an Egyptian cleric who this week urged the Muslim faithful to boycott the Arab world's favourite social networking site, Army Radio reported.

''Going on this website have very dangerous effects on public opinion in general, and in particular on Arab and Islamic people, which have strongly distinctive qualities'', said Sheikh Abdel Hamid al Atrash, the former president of the fatwa commission of the most important Sunni religious institution

Atrash, claims that Facebook triggers illegal reactions to Sharia or Islamic law. ''If one spouse is at work and the other, without moral restraint, has free time and does not know what to do with it, illegal relationships are formed''.

A study initiated by the Centre for Social and Criminal Research stated that the one out of five divorces is caused because of infidelity with a partner met through Facebook.

Religious leaders are not the only authorities to see Facebook as a threat in Egypt, where police have in the past arrested activists who have used the site to orchestrate protests against the government.
