Tokyo  - Tokyo stocks opened higher Tuesday following overnight rises in the US market, but the gains were limited amid fears that an earthquake in China would swing the Japanese market.

The Nikkei 225 Stock Average rose 88.49 points, or 0.64 per cent, to 13,831.85.

The broader Topix index of all first-section issues was also up 9.22 points, or 0.69 per cent, at 1,352.01.

An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale killed more than 9,000 people Monday and left tens of thousands of others still cut off early Tuesday in south-western China.

On currency markets at 9 am (0000 GMT), the dollar was quoted at 103.85-90 yen, up from Monday's 5 pm quote of 103.75-77 yen.

The euro was quoted at 1.5530-35 dollars, up from Monday's 5 pm quote of 1.5394-97 dollars, and at 161.33-38 yen, up from 159.73-77 yen. (dpa)
