Microsoft preparing itself for end of Windows era

LondonMicrosoft, August 5: Microsoft has started a new research project, Midori, to develop a software program that will help uncouple Windows from a single PC.

The company has revealed that a decision to develop Midori was taken because Windows is unlikely to be able to cope with the pace of change in future technology, and the way people use it.

"If you think about how an operating system is loaded, it's loaded onto a hard disk physically located on that machine. The operating system is tied very tightly to that hardware," the BBC quoted Dave Austin, European director of products at Citrix, as saying.

Lenovo Introduces Its Mini IdeaPad S10 Notebook  The market for “notebooks” is expanding day by day, and on Monday, the popular laptop company, Lenovo introduced a low-cost mini-notebook called the IdeaPad S10.

This mini-notebook by Lenovo has a 10 inch screen and a keyboard which is 85% the size of a full keyboard. IdeaPad S10 is powered by Atom processor which was recently released by Intel for mobile internet devices.

Reducing light wastage key to making energy efficient LCD displays

London, August 5 : University of Cincinnati researchers have devised a new way to improve the efficiency of traditional LCD panels by preventing a huge part of the light generated in the display from getting wasted.

Jason Heikenfeld, a university expert, says that his team’s approach uses ultraviolet light and liquid lenses.

He has revealed that the display is made from pixels of red, blue and green phosphorescent materials that emit photons when zapped with ultraviolet light.

This is channelled onto the pixels by tiny "waveguides", he adds.

30pc of U.S. Army may be robotic by 2020

Washington, August 5: U. S. technologists have revealed that the country’s military has plans to have about 30 per cent of the Army comprised of robotic forces by approximately 2020.

Doug Few and Bill Smart of Washington University in St. Louis say that robots are increasingly taking over more soldier duties in Iraq and Afghanistan, and that the U. S. Army wants to make further additions to its robotic fleet.

They, however, also point out that the machines still need the human touch.
