Humans have reached utopia in evolutionary terms, claims UK geneticist

London, October 7 : A leading British genetics expert says that humans will not evolve anymore.

Professor Steve Jones of University College London argues that, at least in the developed world, humans are as close to utopia as they are ever likely to be.

At a UCL Lunch Hour Lecture in London, he highlighted three components of evolution, namely natural selection, mutation and random change.

Here’s how long “Big Bang machine” would take to defrost a pizza!

Here’s how long “Big Bang machine” would take to defrost a pizza!London, September 20: Skeptics dreading that the particle collision in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) would bring about the end of the world, could put their fears to rest, as each collision between a pair of protons in the machine will release an amount of energy comparable to that of two colliding mosquitoes, or the energy needed to defrost a pizza.

Global warming will lead to biodiversity loss and glacial melt, says Indian origin scientist

Global warming will lead to biodiversity loss and glacial melt, says Indian origin scientistWashington, September 18 : An analysis, carried out by a scientist of Indian origin, along with his colleagues, has shown that irreversible global warming will lead to biodiversity loss and substantial glacial melt.

The scientist in question is Professor V. Ramanathan from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC (University of California) San Diego.

Fear gene behind ‘helicopter mom’ behaviour identified

Washington, September 16 : Experiments on mice conducted by Rutgers geneticists have unveiled a gene that promotes “helicopter mom” behaviour in the animal.

Research leader Gleb Shumyatsky, an assistant professor of genetics in the School of Arts and Sciences at Rutgers, says that the gene called stathmin, or oncoprotein 18, motivates female animals to protect newborn pups and interact cautiously with unknown peers.

The researcher has revealed that the "fear gene" is highly concentrated in the amygdala, a key region of the brain that deals with fear and anxiety.

Phoenix Lander to Try Again Testing Martian Soil

Since the time the NASA Phoenix has touched down the Mars’ northern Plain on May 25 (GMT), there have been many attempts made by the scientists to get the Martian soil in the onboard oven of the Phoenix for testing.

The Phoenix Lander had failed to get the Martian soil in one of its tiny Thermal and Evolved-Gas Analyzer instrument ovens (TEGAS), last Friday. Scientists are now aiming at a new method, which they hope would be successful.

Scientists report that the Martian soil was too sticky and thus adhered to the scoop that was actually supposed to sprinkle it into the TEGA oven where it would have been analyzed. The scientists called the sample “Snow White” which was collected from a trench.
