Up for Taliban challenge: army chief

PakistanA week after the Pakistan Taliban threatened attacks against India, army chief General Deepak Kapoor said security forces were prepared to give an appropriate and strong response to any threat from the terror outfit.

Kapoor, however, did not rule out the possibility of the developments in the neighbouring country having a spillover effect.

“Whenever there is turbulence in any particular region, there is always some spillover effect in the neighbouring country…”

The Pakistan Taliban had last week warned that it target India after establishing an Islamic state in Pakistan.

Defence Minister A. K. Antony described the situation in Pakistan as “very serious.”

Asked to comment on Taliban’s threat to carry out attacks on India, Antony said, “We are prepared to meet any challenge to our territorial integrity and national security from any quarter. Our security forces are keeping eternal vigilance.”
