Summer Food Service Program beings in Troy
During summer months, children do not take proper amount of nutrition that makes them not being able to give good performance when they go back to school. Therefore, summer food program is important.
In Troy, the Summer Food Service Program, SFSP, sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has started from Monday. The program has started at 12 locations in Troy and one in Brundidge. Under the program, locations will serve lunch to eligible children on regular basis from June 1 to June 17.
Jann Baxter-Lee, SFSP Coordinator, was of the view that there are children who are not able to have nutritious meal in the summer. Therefore, they will provide them with a healthy meal. As per the program, the healthy meal will be provided at schools, summer camps, parks, churches, day camps and recreation centers.
Baxter-Lee was of the view that children who do not take part in the program can also have the nutritious lunch. Menu will change every day and a typical meal would include a sandwich, fruit, juice and milk.
"The food is prepared at Troy Elementary School, and the meals are delivered in coolers to various sites", affirmed Baxter-Lee. Under the program, they just encourage children to come out and have the healthy meals.
In fact, people have been requested that if they know children who are in need of the meal then they should refer them to the sites that are listed.
