Strike terminated by Port workers
As per media reports, the offended workers of the Marine wing of the Cochin Port Trust (CPT) have withdrawn their strike; the decision taken by them after senior officials held talks with union leaders on Sunday night.
The strike was canceled by the leaders since the authority promised to restore the manpower in the marine wing for the time being. The mentioned man power was available before the implementation of the Central Industrial Tribunal Award.
However, the workers won't be getting the wages if they decide to go on a leave and the remaining workers would be required to continue their duty with the then-existing workforce.
From the time the award has been implemented, it has led to reduction in manpower in many wings of the port. The port decided to re-deploy the personnel in areas where there was manpower shortage.
The strike was withdrawn by the trade union leaders on the promise that other differences of opinion with the management would be discussed within a month.
The names of the officials who represented the port are as follows: Port Secretary Cyrial C. George, Deputy Conservator Captain Paul Joseph and Traffic Manager Rajendra Baibir. The trade union leaders who took part in the discussions included M. M. Lawrence and Shihabudeen of the CITU and Mohammed Hanif of the CPSA.
It should be noted that since the strike was restricted to the Marine wing, the port's routine activities, including movement of container cargo, had remained unaffected on the days of the agitation
If adhered to the sources then a meeting of the Indian Ports Association (IPA), where the chairmen of all ports in India would participate, would go on as scheduled on Monday in the city.
