Ranchi, Jan 8 : Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren on Thursday lost his Tamar Assembly seat to Jharkhand Party candidate Gopal Krishna Patar by a margin of 9000 votes.

Elections for the seat, which fell vacant after the gunning down of JD (U) legislature party leader Ramesh Singh Munda on July 9, 2008, were held on January 3 this year and counting was taken up today.

Meanwhile, the BJP has demanded resignation of Shibu Soren from the Chief Ministership of Jharkhand and president''s rule in the state.

Soren was sworn in as the sixth Chief Minister of Jharkhand on August 27, 2008 and won a trust vote in the Legislative Assembly on August 29, 2008. He was required to be elected to the State Assembly within six months.

He previously represented the Dumka constituency of Jharkhand in the 14th Lok Sabha and is the President of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) political party, a constituent of the UPA.

He was the Minister for Coal in the Union Cabinet in November 2006, when a Delhi district court found him guilty in the murder of his private secretary Shashi Nath Jha in 1994.

The Jharkhand Party has increased its tally in the State assembly to two with Patar winning his electoral battle against Soren on Thursday.

Soren told reporters that he had accepted his defeat and would be consulting the UPA leadership at the Centre on the next step to be taken in a day or two.

He also said that he would consult with UPA leader in Jharkhand, Madhu Koda.

Soren is presently serving his second term as Chief Minister, the first being for nine days in March 2005. (ANI)
