Salmonella Outbreak: 62 People infected in 11 states

A salmonella outbreak due to raw tuna in sushi has been held responsible for making sick 62 people in 11 states. Amongst all, California has witnesses the maximum cases, 34. The federal officials stated that no death has been reported.

Cases in California have taken place in six southern counties, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Ventura. Dr. Matthew Wise, a CDC outbreak-response team leader in Atlanta, was of the view that many would think 62 cases as not a big number, but it is.

"Our reporting usually only captures 1 in 30 cases of salmonella. ... It could really be above a thousand people across the country. This is still a fairly large number of ill people", said Wise.

The outbreak is linked to frozen yellowfin tuna from an Osamu Corporation processing plant in Indonesia. Majority of people who fell sick have confessed of eating sushi made with raw tuna in the week before they fell sick.

Osamu Corporation has announced recall of its products, including frozen tuna and one lot of frozen yellowfin tuna chunk meat.

The CDC has suggested that restaurants and retailers should not serve or sell the affected products that are containing the four-digit purchase order present on the cartons having frozen tuna. The numbers are from 8563 through 8599. The recalled frozen yellowfin tuna chunk meat is having a lot number 68568.
