Ruhr derby ends stalemate as Dortmund score late goal

Ruhr derby ends stalemate as Dortmund score late goalGelsenkirchen, Germany  - The Bundesliga Ruhr derby between Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund on Friday ended 1-1 after Dortmund substitute Mohamed Zidan found a late equalizer for his side.

Kevin Kuranyi scored a spectacular goal midway through the first half to give his side the lead.

A capacity crowd of over 61,000 saw a disappointing first half of the derby between the two traditional rivals from the Ruhr region.

The highlight in the opening half was undoubtedly former Germany international Kuranyi's 20th minute goal, which was a spectacular flying volley.

Turkish international Halil Altintop won the ball for Schalke near the corner flag and crossed into the middle of the area, where Kuranyi's spectacular shot gave goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller no chance.

After the home side went ahead, they seemed content to sit back and allow Dortmund to dictate the pace, but the visitors were unable to create any real chances.

Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp brought on two new strikers for the second half with Nelson Valdez and Zidan and as a result Dortmund looked a bit more dangerous upfront.

Zidan had an excellent chance midway through the second half, but a powerful run by midfielder Jermaine Jones, who slid in to prevent Zidan from shooting, prevented the equalizer.

The Egyptian made amends for his miss ten minutes from the end when Schalke failed to clear the ball in their own area and his powerful shot from close range hit the back of the net.

In the 85th minute Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer denied Zidan a second goal when he dived to his right and cleared a powerful drive around the post for Dortmund's only corner of the game.

Klopp said he was not disappointed with the result.

"After the game we have to be satisfied with the 1-1 draw. We had no chances in the first half. They deserved the opening goal, but we played much better in the second half."

The result leaves Dortmund in eighth place on 32 points, while Schalke are a place and a point behind.

Table toppers Hertha Berlin are away to VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday, while second-place Hoffenheim travel to VfB Stuttgart. The team from the capital are on 40 points, while Hoffenheim and defending champions Bayern Munich, who face Cologne on Saturday, are on 39. (dpa)
