Rising rate of obesity in children in Victoria
The state of Victoria's children report for 2008 revealed that the rising rate of obesity in children. The report brought many issues in limelight regarding health and wellbeing of the children.
Report released by Victorian Minister for Children Maxine Morand showed that the rate of teen pregnancy, smoking and drug use are falling but the rate of sexually transmitted infections is increasing among teenagers.
The report also showed that while 71 per cent of children were undergoing the recommended level of physical activity for their age but nearly a quarter of pre-schoolers and a third of those over 12 were overweight or obese.
The report said that recent research involving year 6 and 8 students showed indigenous children and those who spoke a language other than English at home were significantly more likely to be overweight or obese.
The report also highlighted the issue of increasing rate of type-1 diabetes in children. The number of type-1 diabetes diagnoses has risen from about 19 children per 100,000 in 2000 to 25 per 100,000 in 2006, putting Victoria above the national average of 23.
