Maneka Gandhi files her nomination from AonlaBareilly (Uttar Pradesh), Apr 18 : Former Union Minister and mother of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Varun Gandhi, Maneka Gandhi, filed her nomination papers from Aonla parliamentary constituency in Bareilly District on Saturday.

The 52-year-old BJP candidate, accompanied by local party leaders, filed her papers before the Bareilly District Magistrate at collectorate office here.

Varun GandhiThe Supreme Court has ordered the release of BJP candidate Varun Gandhi, the grandson of ex-India PM Indira Gandhi, on parole for two weeks. He was arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) for his communally-offensive comments against Muslims at the March 6 and March 8 rallies in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh.

Though the coverage of Varun Gandhi's inflammatory speeches were extensively broadcast on Indian television, he said that the recordings were "doctored." However, the Election Commission was convinced that coverage had "not been tampered with, doctored or morphed."

1200 people in UP fail to cast vote in first phaseNathmalpur (Uttar Pradesh), Apr 16 : Violence broke out at St. Joseph school polling station at Uttar Pradesh''s Nathmalpur village today as almost 1200 people could not cast their votes in the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections here.

The villagers reportedly protested at the polling station as their names were deleted from the voters list.

They shouted slogans against the authorities. The local police officials were later called to control the situation.

Varun Gandhi is expected be released shortly and is likely to conduct a roadshow from Etah to Bareilly after his release.

Earlier, the Supreme Court ordered the release of Varun Gandhi on parole for a period of two weeks after it received an undertaking from him that he would not indulge in communally sensitive and hate speeches.
