Karunanidhi appeals to all parties for united stand on Tamil issueChennai, Feb. 6, : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday appealed to all parties to speak in one voice and adopt a united stand on Sri Lankan Tamil issue.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief said a solution to the issues was elusive because of the infighting among Tamil groups in the Sri Lanka.

"There is no unanimity here also on the issue. If all of us remain united, the Tamil race in Sri Lanka will be saved," Karunanidhi said.

Jayalalithaa condemns Chennai car burning incident

JayalalithaaChennai, Feb 6, : All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Friday condemned the incident in which the car of the Communist Party of India (CPI) state unit secretary D. Pandian was set ablaze by unidentified persons.

The incident took place early on Friday when the car of the leader was set ablaze by some unidentified persons at his residence.

Pandian was not at home when the incident took place.

The vehicle was partially damaged in the incident. No arrest has been made so far.

Students get back home in Ranchi from Tamil Nadu to escape turmoil

Ranchi, Feb 6 : Hundreds of students studying in Tamil Nadu got back home in Ranchi to escape the present turmoil in the state over the Sri Lankan Army action against the LTTE.

The students were asked to vacate their hostels to avoid getting into untoward situations.

"Due to the disturbed situation in Sri Lanka, a strike has been going on in Tamil Nadu. We were asked to leave. The government came up with a notice that all universities should be closed and all hostels be vacated. So our dean and warden immediately asked us to vacate. So, we left the place," said Vikram Rana, a student.

A strike was called on Wednesday in Tamil Nadu protesting Sri Lanka''s military offensive against Tamil Tigers.

Tamil NaduNew Delhi - Political parties and pressure groups Wednesday called a general strike in India's southern state of Tamil Nadu to protest Sri Lanka's military offensive against the Tamil rebels.

Some incidents of violence were reported as protestors blocked trains, stoned buses and ransacked a post office in different parts of the state.

At least 30 students were arrested for attempting to blockade roads in state capital Chennai where nearly 8,000 police were deployed, local police said.

The agitating people also threatened to go on an indefinite hunger strike if the Government does not respond to their demands.
