Taiwan exempts five European countries from visa requirementTaipei  - Taiwan has exempted five European countries from visa requirements to promote trade and tourism with them, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

The five countries are Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Lithuania and Estonia. Their citizens will be allowed to stay up to 30 days in Taiwan without applying for a visa, the ministry's Bureau of Consular Affairs said on its website.

The visa-exemption measure became effective for Poland, Slovakia and Hungary on October 1, for Lithuania on November 22 and for Estonia on December 1.

Taiwan warns travelers to be cautious when traveling in Thailand

Taipei - Taiwan warned its citizens Wednesday to be cautious when traveling in Thailand as anti-government protests are escalating, forcing the temporary closure of Bangkok's international airport.

The Foreign Ministry urged Taiwanese who work or travel in Thailand to avoid going to places where the protests are taking place. In case of emergency, they should dial a 24-hour hotline set up by Taiwan's representative office in Bangkok for help.

The ministry advised Taiwanese who are in Thailand or those who plan to travel there to check with airlines before going to the airport, as many flights between Bangkok and Taipei have been canceled or delayed.

In the poem "To My Wife," published by the Liberty Times, Chen compared the Taipei Penitentiary, where he is being held, to the Bastille, the Paris prison whose storming in 1789 is considered the beginning of the French Revolution:

taiwanTaipei - Worldwide notebook personal computer (PC) shipment in 2009 is forecasted to reach 138 million units, growing about 11.3 per cent compared to the expected shipment volume of 124 million units in 2008, a Taiwan research agency said Tuesday.

Worldwide netbook PC shipment volume in 2009 is forecasted to reach 22.64 million units, growing 102 per cent compared to the expected volume of 11.21 million units in
2008, the Market Information Centre (MIC) under the Institute of Information Industry, said in a news release.

Taiwan to dispatch mobile computer classroom to reduce digital gap

Taipei - The Taipei county government, to reduce the digital gap between the countryside and cities, will dispatch a mobile computer classroom to teach people how to use computers, the county government said Tuesday.

Under the programme, the Taipei county government in North Taiwan will dispatch six coaches carrying teachers, computers, desks and chairs to give computer classes free of charge.

"The only requirement is that there must be 18 participants for our class. Applications can be made by individuals or an institution," Chen Shu-hui, from the Taipei county government's Computer Centre, said.
