Taiwan President Ma says China is the key to island's economy

Taipei  - President Ma Ying-jeou said Wednesday that China is the key to Taiwan's economy and the third round of Taipei-Beijing talks will focus on economic cooperation.

In an interview with the Radio Taiwan International (RTI) broadcast live to the mainland, Ma explained his China policy and answered some of the 8,000 questions posted by Chinese listeners online.

"Trade with China has reached a record high of 130 billion US dollars. That is significant because foreign trade has always been key to Taiwan's economic growth, sometimes contributing as much as 75 per cent to Taiwan's economic growth," he said.

Taiwan museum mulls showing Chinese treasures in Britain, Japan

Taipei - Taiwan's National Palace Museum, which holds the world's largest collection of Chinese artifacts, plans to hold an exhibition in Britain and Japan, the museum said Tuesday.

"We are negotiating with the British Museum for an exchange of exhibitions - we hold an exhibition of Chinese treasures at the British Museum and they display their collection of Greek sculptures at the National Palace Museum," a museum press officer told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

"The negotiation is still going on. We don't know when the exhibitions can be held, because even after we have reached agreement, we have to wait till both museums have the space to hold the exhibitions," she said, asking not to be named.

Taiwan baseball set for new start after game-fixing scandal

Taipei - Taiwan's professional baseball league plans to make a new start in 2009 following a game-fixing scandal, the league said on Monday.

At a team managers' meeting, the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) reiterated its resolve to crack down on game fixing.

The CPBL now has four teams after the T-Rex team was dissolved in October over game-fixing and the Whales were disbanded in early November due to a lack of funds.

The CPBL urged the remaining four teams to prepare for the selection of players before the start of the baseball season on March 28, 2009.

Taiwan Semiconductor revises down output target owing to recession

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (TSMC) LogoTaipei - Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker, on Monday revised down its fourth-quarter production target owing to the global recession.

"The company now expects fourth-quarter revenue to be between 63 billion and 65 billion Taiwan dollars (1.9 billion-1.96 billion US dollars), instead of the previous expectation of 69 billion-71 billion Taiwan dollars," TSMC said in a statement.
