Common touch, cash and cool key to landslide ANC victory

African National Congress (ANC)Johannesburg - As the African National Congress (ANC) cruised to another overwhelming victory in South Africa's fourth democratic general election, the popularity of the ruling party of 15 years was being attributed to three main factors: the common touch, cash and cool.

Results from Wednesday's national and provincial elections showed the party's majority only slightly dented by the emergence of new opposition.

Results from Wednesday's national and provincial elections were still trickling into the central election centre in Pretoria, two days after voting.

The Independent Electoral Commission said all the votes had been counted but that the verification and data entry was still ongoing.

The ANC was receiving 60.6 per cent of the vote, followed by the Democratic Alliance of Cape Town Mayor Helen Zille with 21.88 per cent. Coming in third was the Congress of the People (COPE), founded by disaffected ANC members last year, with 7.63 per cent of the vote.

Disarray in polls - 1 million extra ballots printed

Independent Electoral Commission Johannesburg  - South Africa's Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said Wednesday evening that an extra 1 million ballot papers were being printed after they ran out in some places, spawning long delays, during the country's fourth democratic national and provincial elections.

With less than 15 minutes to go before voting stations were due to close, an IEC official admitted they had just ordered more ballots, but said they were being printed as a "contingency measure" and had not yet been distributed.
