Sixth homeless person dies of cold in Paris area

FranceParis  - A homeless man was found frozen to death in Paris early Friday, the sixth homeless individual to have died of the cold in the Paris area in the past month, France Info radio reported.

The body of the 55-year-old man was found on a sidewalk in the fashionable Fourth Arrondissement, not far from the Place de la Bastille, a site popular with tourists.

On Wednesday, Housing Minister Christine Boutin had provoked outrage among civil rights organizations by demanding a law that would allow authorities to force homeless people into shelters during bad weather.

Search for Airbus crash victims resumes in France

Airbus A320Paris - The search for the victims of the crash of an Airbus A320 in the Mediterranean Sea resumed early Friday off the French coast, with searchers holding out no hope of finding any survivors.

Seven people are believed dead in the crash, which occurred Thursday afternoon near the city of Perpignan, where the aircraft was being overhauled.

Two bodies were recovered from the waters on Thursday before the search was called off because of heavy rains and high waves. The continuing bad weather was hampering search efforts on Friday as well.

Paris  - Three people died and four were missing and feared dead in the crash of an Airbus A320 jet on Thursday into the Mediterranean Sea during a maintenance flight.

The aircraft plunged into waters just off the French coast after taking off in late afternoon with a crew of seven from Perpignan, France, where the plane was being overhauled.

The plane belonged to the German carrier XL Airways and had been leased from Air New Zealand. It was to have been returned to Air New Zealand in the coming days following completion of the maintenance work, a spokesman for XL Airways said.

At least two of the crew were German. Three bodies have been recovered from the water.

The aircraft, which belonged to the carrier Air New Zealand, plunged into the waters just off the coast after taking off in late afternoon with a crew of seven from the French city of Perpignan, where the plane was being overhauled.

One body has been recovered from the water. French Navy boats, planes and a helicopter have been deployed to the site of the crash, but a spokesman for the French coast guard said there were no survivors.
