Manipur students protest dope charge against wrestler Monika Devi

Manipuris shocked over kidnapping of children by militant groupsImphal, Sept 11 : Hundreds of students took to the streets here on Wednesday to demand a fair probe into the doping charges against weightlifter Monika Devi, who was denied a berth in the Indian squad for the Beijing Olympics.

Carrying placards, the protesters shouted slogans against the Sports Authority of India (SAI) charging it with discrimination against people hailing from the remote regions.

5 militants killed in an encounter in Manipur

ManipurBishenpur (Manipur), Sept 9 : Security personnel shot dead five separatist guerrillas hiding out on an island in the middle of a lake in Bishenpur area of Manipur during an encounter, police officials said on Tuesday.

The rebels, belonging to PREPAK, a powerful armed group in Manipur were hiding in a house they had built in one of the lake''s in many small islands, a defence spokesman said.

Officials said that large cache of arms and ammunitions have been recovered from the militants.

Manipur students'', faculty stage protests against militant extortion

Imphal, Sep 1: The faculty and students of the Institute of Cooperative Management recently staged a sit-in protest against the huge monetary demands of some underground groups in the state.

"I and also the people of Manipur do not agree with these anti-social activities. Everyone hates this culture of fear that has gripped the state. I would like to appeal to the militants to stop such activities," said Kh. Pranjit Singh, a student.

Brojendra, another student added, "Militant activities taking place in Manipur are not good. They are ruining the student''s career and time is being wasted. We are not able to pick up the required skills. I feel this is not good."

Manipur’ Mao tribe revisits its culture via traditional sports

Mao Village (Imphal), Aug. 20 : Mao, the Naga tribe of Manipur, has always cherished its traditional games that have since time immemorial given them a medium to keep their tradition and culture alive.

Recently, Mao tribe held traditional games Osu Kaka and Lerii Kaphi Cho, as a gesture to revisit the traditional games.

Located 109 kilometers from Imphal, on Manipur Nagaland border, Mao Village is known for its rich tradition and culture.

Osu Kaka, an indigenous game of the Mao tribe, is held during the post harvest Chiithuni festival, is known for its uniqueness.

"It has become very difficult for the people here. Sometimes we feel that the situation may even get worse," said Sunita, a parent.
