Kolkata, Nov. 9 : Sharmistha Mullick, an art collector in Kolkata, is trying to give embroidery; a fabric embellishment technique, a new expression by presenting it in an unconventional art form.
She has received training in embroidery for about three years and has been seeking to give it a new definition since 1992.
At first glance, it is possible that one may mistake her collected works for paintings or pencil sketches.
Sharmistha says that painting with a brush and colours is much easier. She says mixing can change colours, one can almost re-do the whole work on canvas by colouring over. However, for embroidery art, there are no such easy avenue.
Kolkata, Nov. 9 : As Sourav Ganguly’s glorious international cricket career camed to an end on Sunday with a duck in Nagpur, his retirement drove a Kolkata-based musical band to come up with songs as a tribute to him.
Orchid, the musical Bangla band, has composed several songs to glorify Ganguly’s 13-year cricket career during which he put up a scintillating display and led India with aplomb.
The band members have given an everlasting salute to him through their music.
Their verses have eulogised his fighting spirit, his mental toughness and leadership quality.
The dream of Satyajit Ray fans for such a long time has finally come true. Ray’s never-before-seen controversial documentary “Sikkim” will be seen for the first time at the 14th Kolkata Film Festival (KFF) on November 17.
The film will be resorted by the United States Academy of Motion Pictures. Ray’s other classics like Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne and Abhijaan has also been restored by the academy.
Kolkata, Nov 6 : As former Indian cricket captain Saurav Ganguly plays his last test, fans at his hometown in Kolkata express dismay over his decision to retire.
The 36-year-old, left-handed batsman, Ganguly had announced at the start of the India-Australia series that it would be his last.
He was named in the squad for the first two tests despite being dropped for a premier domestic game, seen as a selection match, following a poor series in Sri Lanka in August.
Kolkata police has arrested one of its sub-inspector Shankar Chakraborti for smuggling out ammunition from police armoury.
Chakraborti was remanded to police custody for four days by a court on Tuesday.
He had been selling ammunition to criminals for nearly two decades said a top police official.
"He built up a racket to collect ammunition issued for practice firing at the camp. Probably, he used to collect the bullets from the trainees, who did not complete their quota of practice firing," he added. Chakraborti was selling a bullet for Rs. 100. The arrested SI who was working in the CID had a rapport with local criminals looking for ammunition.
Few nurses at the NRS Medical College and Hospital protested against the hospital authorities. The nurses claim that staff nurse Kaveri Bhowmik died due to negligence of the hospital authorities.
Death certificate of Staff Nurse Kaveri Bhowmik says that she had suffered a stroke but fellow nurses claim she showed the symptoms of dengue or encephalitis. They also say that she was not given proper treatment, not even given a bed and was also not given proper attention by the head of the nursing staff.
