Children Development Khazana in Leh to secure kids futureLeh, Mar 30 : A bank run for street children at Leh in Kashmir has enabled them to become self- reliant.

A non-government organisation called Leh Nutrition Project started the Children Development Khazana (Bal Vikas Bank) in 2005 with the support of ''Butterflies'', Programme with Street and Working Children, an NGO based in Delhi.

The aim of establishing this Khazana is to protect the interests of street children by enabling them to save money for their future.

Owing to global warming, most of the small glaciers in Kashmir have melted totally, while the larger ones have decreased in size.

According to a study carried out by the Action Aid International (AAI) last year, many areas in Kashmir have seen a complete disappearance of small glaciers.

Imported flowers for Vaishno Devi temple during Navratri festivalKatra, March 30 : On the occasion of Navratri festival, the famous Vaishno Devi temple near Jammu has been decorated with special flowers brought from Norway, Sweden, Russia, and other foreign countries.

Officials related to Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board say that this is for the first time that flowers that the temple has been decorated with imported flowers.

The countries from where the flowers have been imported also include Austria, United Kingdom and Australia.

Children's film festival in Kashmir Srinagar, Mar 30 : A four-day long children's film festival opened in Srinagar with the aim of helping children, particularly orphans, overcome their trauma.

The 'Shehjaar Children Theatre Festival 2009' is being jointly organised by the Help Foundation, a local NGO, and the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Trust.

Nighat Shafi, an organiser of the festival, said that its main aim was to lessen the stress of the local kids and help them smile for a while.

M K Dwivedi, additional Chief Executive Officer of the shrine board, said that more than 6.5 million pilgrims visit the shrine every year, and the number of pilgrims is rising year-on-year.

Top LeT militant killed in Kupwara encounter: Army

Jammu & KashmirNew Delhi, Mar 26 : The Army on Thursday revealed that a top militant of the Pakistan based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) was killed in the gun-battle with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir''s Kupwara district.

On receiving information about militant infiltration in the forest area, the Army, assisted by local police had acted promptly and launched a gunbattle on March 20, in which the self-styled district commander of LeT Abdullah was killed, a defence spokesman said.

The militants had sneaked into Kupwara as the dense forest range is close to the Line of Control (LoC).
