Uneasy calm in Assam after serial blastsGuwahati, Oct 31 : An uneasy calm prevailed in Assam, a day after a series of bomb blasts in quick succession ripped through Guwahati and three other towns on Thursday in which 70 people were killed and over 300 injured.

Although normalcy is returning, the shock caused by serial explosions is still on in the minds of the people.

Ganeshguri, one of worst affected area in the blast, the otherwise busy area lay deserted this morning with vegetables strewn around the place.

Shivraj Patil to visit Assam todayGuwahati, Oct 31: Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil will visit Assam today to take the stock of the situation after Thursday''s serial blasts in the state.

Senior BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, L K Advani, is also scheduled to visit the state later in the day.

Meanwhile, a massive search operation has been launched to arrest those involved in blasts, in which 70 people were killed and over 300 injured.

A seven-member National Security Guard (NSG) team has already reached Guwahati to identify the explosives used in the blasts.

ULFA may be behind serial blasts says Assam Government

Assam, GuwahatiGuwahati, Oct 30 : The Assam government on Thursday said that the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) may be behind today’s serial blasts in the state, adding that it was too early to reach a conclusion.

Minutes after the explosions, Assam''s Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters, "It is very early to make a conclusion but ULFA has a history of triggering serial blasts."

Sarma said the objective of triggering the blasts in crowded places was to claim maximum lives.

11 feared dead, 50 injured in Assam serial blastsGuwahati, Oct 30 : At least 11 persons died and 50 injured in at least 11 serial blasts in Guwahati and Upper Assam this afternoon. All the blasts are said to have taken place within a span of 15 minutes.

According to official sources, one of the blasts took place in front of the Kamrup district deputy commissioner''s office in Guwahati. Two other bombs exploded at Ganeshguri and Fancy Bazaar areas. A yet other blast took place in Barpeta district and two explosions occurred in Bongaigaon area.

Visit Umananda temple near Guwahati to meet rare Golden Langurs

Guwahati, Oct.26: A visit to the Umananda Temple at Peacock Island near Guwahati offers a chance to see the endangered Golden langurs (Trachypithecus Geei), a rare species of primates. They have taken shelter in the compound here.
 
Built by an Ahom king in 1594, the temple is devoted to Lord Shiva. It is today visited by scores of such tourists who come here particularly for these rare monkeys and enjoy spending time with them.

At this temple, the Hindu gods and goddesses are engraved on the rock walls. These sculptures represent the craftsmanship of the Assamese artisans.
