Iceland's president cancels formal visit to Bangladesh

Dhaka, BangladeshDhaka - Iceland's President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson has cancelled a five-day state visit to Bangladesh, diplomatic sources said Tuesday.

Foreign Ministry officials said Iceland's leader was due to arrive in Dhaka from the Beijing Olympics Tuesday to start a formal visit to Bangladesh.

A senior Bangladeshi official, who did not wish be identified, said the visit had been put off indefinitely without assigning any reason.

Dhaka, Aug 25 : Former Bangladeshi premier Khaleda Zia’s eldest son and her heir apparent Tareque Rahman has reportedly been partially paralysed after his two bone in the back broke during torture by security agencies, a doctor attending to him said.

Quoting Rahman’s medical report, the doctor said that he was strung up blindfolded in a dark room, then dropped down and struck against a wall, fracturing two bones in his back.

Bangladesh mother throws herself, daughters under train Dhaka - A woman killed herself and baby daughter by jumping under a train in eastern Bangladesh, but a second daughter survived the murder-suicide, a railway official said Saturday.

The unidentified woman, 30, jumped with her two children into the path of a train near Kishoreganj, 240 kilometres east of the capital Dhaka, security guard Abdul Alim Chowdhury said.

The mother died on the spot and the 2-year-old daughter also succumbed to injuries on way to a local health clinic, he said.

Bangladesh discounts fears over Tata Group pullout Dhaka- The military backed interim government in Bangladesh Tuesday announced plans for hoisting the national flag at half mast at all private and state establishments this Friday to show respect to the country's founding leader Sheikh Mujib ur Rahman, who was brutally killed in 1975.

The interim authorities also decided to call a day of national mourning for Friday to recall the memory of Mujib, the founder of Bangladesh, who steered the country to independence from Pakistan in December 1971.
