Brussels  - Turkey has nothing against Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Turkish President Abdullah Gul said Friday, three days after a top official warned that Ankara could block the Dane's appointment as NATO secretary general.

"We as Turkey don't have any attitude against the prime minister or anyone else. He is one of the most successful prime ministers in Europe," Gul told reporters in Brussels after meetings with European Union officials.

Brussels - European Union officials on Thursday were struggling to douse a diplomatic fire with the United States after the bloc's top political leader called US economic policy a "road to hell" just a week before a major meeting with the US president.

Bree, Belgium - Former world women's tennis number one Kim Clijsters announced Thursday her return to the WTA circuit after two years away, media in her homeland of Belgium reported.

"My hunger has come back through training," the 25-year-old told journalists in the north-eastern Belgian town of Bree, Belgian broadcaster VRT reported.

Clijsters, crowned world number one in August 2003 and winner of the US Open in 2005, retired from the professional game in May 2007 to marry and raise a child, Jada, now 13 months old.

Brussels - Acknowledging the extraordinarily adverse impact of the economic downturn on European Union governments' public accounts, the bloc's executive in Brussels on Tuesday granted France, Britain and three other member states more time to correct their swelling budget deficits.

France, whose budget deficit to gross domestic product (GDP) ratio reached 3.4 per cent in 2008 and is set to hit 5.6 per cent this year, was given until 2012 to bring its deficit below the 3 per cent limit set by EU rules.

Brussels - The European Union's executive was set on Tuesday to give France until 2012 to bring its government deficit back in line with EU rules, diplomats in Brussels said Monday.

At a meeting in the French city of Strasbourg, the European Commission is to debate what to do to with euro users France, Greece, Ireland and Spain, after their government debts broke the EU's limit of 3 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2008.
