EU backs Spain "gate-crashing" world's top financial watchdog Brussels - In a diplomatic victory for Spain, European Union leaders Friday were set to back its invitation to the Financial Stability Forum (FSF) of top central banks, just weeks after six middle-weight EU members accused the country of "gate-crashing."

A draft statement prepared for a summit of EU leaders and seen by Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa welcomed the expansion of the FSF to "all members of the Group of 20 (G20) leading economies, Spain and the European Commission," the EU's executive.

EU, US not doing enough to salvage the economy, economist says Brussels  - American economist and Nobel laurate Paul Krugman said Tuesday that Europe and the United States should at least double their fiscal efforts in order to salvage the global economy.

"The United States is not doing enough to fight the crisis, and Europe is doing a bit less than half as much as the US. So no, it's inadequate," Krugman said after a meeting with EU officials in Brussels.

"One would of course expect that a new Israeli government would respect the previous obligations: that includes the commitment to a two-state solution," Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said as he arrived in Brussels for regular talks with EU counterparts.

EU welcomes Pakistan deal on judgeBrussels - The European Union on Monday said the Pakistani government's decision to reinstate the country's sacked top judge would allow the country to move forward and confront its real enemies - extremism and fundamentalism.

"I am very positive about what has happened. This is a good step forward," said the bloc's external affairs commissioner, Benita Ferrero-Waldner.

Ferrero-Waldner was part of the EU troika that held talks in Prague last week with Pakistani Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi.
