Lebanese president requests medium weapons from Iran for army

Michel SuleimanBeirut  - Lebansese President Michel Suleiman has asked Iran for medium-sized weapons for the army, in a move aimed at shifting Iran's assistance from the country's militant Hezbollah movement to the state, a Lebanese government official said Wednesday.

The official, who requested anonymity, said Suleiman had made clear during a two-day visit to Tehran earlier this week that he was not seeking to obtain long-range missiles or jet fighters, but rather modern medium arms that would help the Lebanese army combat terrorism and maintain national security.

Hezbollah rules out Israeli attack on the region

Lebanon FlagBeirut - Lebanon's pro-Iranian Hezbollah movement dismissed the possibility of any Israeli military incursions into Lebanon or the wider region, but added that the movement is more prepared than before to confront any possible attack.

"The Israelis, unlike what is being said, are not ready for any field battle," Hezbollah's international relations official Nawaf Moussawi was quoted as saying by Hezbollah's al Nour radio station on Tuesday.

"The resistance in Lebanon is more ready than the Israeli army to engage in a military battle," Moussawi added.

Hezbollah "not surprised" by ban on its television in Germany

"We were not surprised because it seems Germany is following the footsteps of the US and France," a source at the movement, who requested anonymity, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur, dpa.

Lebanon celebrates Independence Day amid tight security measures

Beirut, LebanonBeirut - Lebanon celebrated its 65 years of independence on Saturday with a military parade staged in downtown Beirut amid tight security.

The ceremony was attended by President Michel Suleiman, Prime Minister Fouad Seniora, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and other ministers, MPs and ambassadors.

Streets leading to the Martyr Square location were cordoned off for the ceremony, held for the first time in three years owing to the unrest which has gripped the country.

One killed, 9 wounded in shooting incident in northern Lebanon

Beirut - One person was killed and nine others, including three soldiers, were wounded in an incident Friday that began when a car failed to stop at a military checkpoint in the northern city of Tripoli, Lebanese army sources said.

"Lebanese troops opened fire as the Renault 18 failed to abide by orders to stop at the army checkpoint," one army source said.

According to initial reports by the army, the driver of the car, who was wounded, and the other two men who were in the vehicle were drunk at the time. All were arrested.

Almost simultaneously, a man identified as Ahmed al-Zoubi was killed when he fired at the army checkpoint, prompting the troops to return fire.
