Fighting terrorism won''t affect ethnic relations within China: OfficialBeijing, Aug. 16 : The Chinese Government''s effort to fight terrorism would not affect relations among various ethnic groups in China, said Mao Gongning, director of the Policy and Law Department with the State Ethnic Affairs Commission.

Talking to reporters here on Saturday, he said: "To crack down on those terrorist activities in accordance with laws is conducive to uniting the Chinese people and safeguarding national unification."

Beijing police detain five pro-Tibet protesters

Tibet IndependenceBeijing - Beijing police on Friday morning detained five foreign tourists who were advocating "Tibet independence" near the construction site of China Central Television's new building, state media said.

The protest happened around 5:50 am (0950 GMT), Xinhua cited police officials saying.

Three of the five foreigners were from the United States, one was from Canada and the other from Britain, according to Xinhua. They came to China on tourist visas.

The government of the province Yunnan also said six people were still missing and 42 were injured.

Around 1.25 million people are affected, thousands of houses were destroyed and direct economic losses reached 746 million yuan (108 million dollars), the agency said.

China enformces beer for air forceBeijing - Pilots serving in China's air force are banned from drinking alcohol with their lunch when at work, according to new regulations in force since Monday.

Soldiers flaunting the ban are threatened with demerit, demotion or dismissal, the official Xinhua news agency said.

The teetotal duty for officers serving in China's air force was to improve the image and the leadership of the troop, the agency reported.

Offenders are to be detected using breathalyzers set up in sentries and posts at parking lots.
