Attacks on Athens banks during the night, but no riots

Athens - Unknown assailants attacked five banks with petrol bombs and household gas canisters in the Athens suburb of Kalamaki overnight, Greek television reported Saturday morning.

An office of the ruling Nea Dimokratia party was also attacked, while a mobile telephone business was destroyed.

The attacks lasted only a few minutes, the television report said. There were no riots in Athens or other cities as had occurred in the previous week.

Shortly before midnight some 50 cyclists blocked the main road in front of the parliament building for 30 minutes and shouted chants against police brutality, the television report said.

The protest caused traffic problems in central Athens.

Two dead as storms hit Greece

Athens - Two people were reported dead after their car was swept away by waves near the port of the holiday island of Kefalonia as dropping temperatures and heavy rain hit Greece on Friday.

Strong rain calms down Greek protests

Athens  - Police recorded the calmest night since the outbreak of violence after a fatal police shooting of a teenager last weekend, Greek state radio said Friday.

There were no reports of rioting during the night, the protests dampened by heavy rains falling across Greece.

The results of the ballistic examination of the bullet which killed 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos on Saturday are expected to be released Friday. The policeman who shot the boy remains in custody in a high-security prison in the Athens suburb Korydallos.

New student rallies were planned for Friday and Monday.

Clean-up crews attempt to re-establish order after riots in Greece

Greece FlagAthens - Hundreds of mask-wearing municipal workers used bulldozers and water hoses to clear the streets of Athens from marble chunks, broken glass and burned barricades on Thursday following five days of rioting and social unrest.

While no major demonstrations were planned Thursday, authorities braced themselves for more civil unrest as tensions remained high over the police shooting of a
15-year-old boy at the weekend.

Two officers involved in the teenager's shooting were taken into custody and charged with manslaughter.

Greek court orders policemen held in killing of teenager

Athens  - A Greek court on Wednesday ordered two policemen charged in the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old boy last Saturday to be held in jail until trial.
