RealNetworks has lost the battle against MPAA in the recent RealDVD issue. The trade group MPAA, representing the six largest film studios of Hollywood had earlier filed a case against the RealNetworks for its RealDVD software.

The main concern was the software of RealDVD from Real allows its users to copy and store films to their hard drive, which caused a loss for the Hollywood movie makers.

They have claimed that the software copying act was a violation of the US copyright law. MPAA had urged to stop the sale of RealDVD. To their success, a permanent injunction has been issued against Real by the U. S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel. Now RealNetworks have to stop the sale of RealDVD as per the ruling.

However, there has been a settlement between Real and the Motion Picture Association of America to stop the sale of RealDVD or any other similar product. Apart from that, the company has to pay $4.5 million to the studios as reimbursement.

MPAA has expressed its gratitude towards the legal system taking the required steps to prevent the illegal use of the copyright protection.
