Paris  - Police arrested 33 people overnight Thursday as scattered unrest flared in the French overseas department of Guadeloupe, France-Info radio reported.

However, there was no repeat of the previous night's violence that saw one man shot dead and six police officers injured by gunfire.

In several communities in the Caribbean island group youths again targeted police and firefighters with gunfire, but no one was reported injured.

Guadeloupe is in the fifth week of a general strike and protests against the high cost of living. French President Nicolas Sarkozy is scheduled to meet Guadaloupean law-makers on Thursday evening to discuss the issue.

Prime Minister Francois Fillon told RTL radio on Thursday that agreement had been reached on one of the main demands posed by the LKP collective that is leading the protests and that low-paid Guadaloupean workers would be granted a pay rise of "almost 200 euros" per month. (dpa)
