The film, also starring Diana Ross, was actually based on a 1975 Broadway show titled ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’, which exclusively featured African American actors.
Sidney Lumet directed the film in 1978 with Jackson, Ross, and Richard Pryor as cast members.
