CJI announces 60 new CBI courts across India

K. G. Balakrishnan New Delhi, Apr 2 : The Chief Justice of India K. G. Balakrishnan on Thursday announced to set up 60 new Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) courts across the country.

"A recent survey shows 9000 cases involving the CBI are pending in various courts. After keeping that on mind, 60 new CBI courts will be set up across the country," Balakrishnan said while delivering the 10th D. P. Kohli Memorial Lecture here.

The lecture was based on the "Criminal Justice System- Growing Responsibility in the face of Challenges in modern Society".

Chief Justice Balakrishnan expresses regret over Chennai violence

K.G. BalakrishnanNew Delhi, Feb 21 : Supreme Court Chief Justice K. G. Balakrishnan, on Saturday expressed regret over the clash between the lawyers and police in the Madras High Court premises.

Reacting to the episode that has unfolded over the past two days, Chief Justice Balakrishnan told reporters here that he is still ascertaining the full facts and is in close touch with court authorities in Chennai.

He, however, dismissed the need for visiting Chennai for the purpose.

The advocates were protesting against the arrest of their colleagues in connection with an assault case.

Some Allahabad HC judges may face transfer in PF scam: Chief Justice Balakrishnan

New Delhi, Jan. 18 : Chief Justice of India K. G. Balakrishnan has stated that some judges of the Allahabad High Court are proposed to be transferred in connection with the Ghaziabad provident fund scam. But no final decision could be made in the case as yet.

"The CBI has made some preliminary inquiries. So we propose to transfer some judges. But no decision has been taken to transfer them," the Chief Justice Balakrishnan said.

Though the Chief Justice denied suggestions that the cumbersome process of impeachment had deterred judiciary from taking tough action against judges of the higher courts.
