Brown survives another Labour MP rebellion

Gorden BrownLondon, Sept. 7 : British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has managed to convince rebels within his Labour party to give him some political breathing space with regard to imposing a windfall tax on energy companies.

A rebel MP, Rob Marris, had led calls for suppliers to be hit with a one-off tax to help poor families meet the cost of rising energy bills. But he decided not to press ahead with the demand, as it would have led to cabinet resignations.

Britain’s Chancellor of Exchequer Alistair Darling and John Hutton, Secretary of State for Business, had warned that a windfall tax would damage the economy.

Fourth man charged over alleged ‘al Qaeda’ plot to kill Brown

London, Sep 2 : A fourth man has been charged with possessing terrorist material following an investigation into an alleged threat to assassinate British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Muhammad Ali Mumtaz Ahmad, 24, from the Whalley area of Blackburn, is due to appear before Westminster Magistrates Court in London on Tuesday.

He is jointly charged with Abbas Iqbal, 23, and Ilyas Iqbal, 21, who were previously remanded in custody.

Police have been given more time to quiz a fifth man, arrested in Derby, the BBC reported.

Ahmad was arrested on August 26 as part of a counter-terrorism operation involving Lancashire and Greater Manchester Police.

According to The Sun, fears of a coup to unseat Brown appear to be fizzling out because of this new major crisis.

The tabloid says that with Foreign Secretary David Miliband, Brown’s only rival for the post of Prime Minister, being preoccupied with Russia’s aggression against Georgia, Cabinet ministers are now shrinking away from forcing Brown out.

Labour MPs who were so keen to give Brown the boot just a few weeks ago, have also gone quiet.

Three Brit Muslims charged for ''threats to kill Gordon Brown''

Gorden BrownLondon, Aug. 29 : Three British Muslims have been charged for threatening to assassinate Prime Minister Gordon Brown, a plot that was foiled in a time.

Ishaq Kanmi, 22, from Blackburn, Lancashire has been charged with soliciting murder and belonging, or claiming to belong, to al-Qaeda.

He also been charged with inviting support for a proscribed organization and for disseminating terrorist publications.

Abbas Iqbal, 23, also from Blackburn, has been charged with disseminating terrorist publications and possession of an article for the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism.

Brown set November deadline to save his job

Gorden BrownLondon, Aug. 28 : Britain’s Cabinet Ministers have given Prime Minister Gordon Brown time till November to improve Labour''s prospects.

According to The Independent, senior ministers believe that it would be a mistake to move against Brown before Labour''s annual conference next month, which they warn could descend into "shambles".

“He deserves one last chance to turn it round and we should support him in that. He might be able to do it. If he can''t, then we will have to take some big decisions and think through the consequences," the paper quoted one minister, as saying.
