Kabul  - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown arrived Thursday on a surprise visit to Afghanistan and was expected to meet Afghan President Hamid Karzai, an Afghan Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman said.

During his one-day visit, Brown was scheduled to hold a joint press conference with Karzai Thursday in Karzai's fortified presidential palace, spokesman Sultan Ahmad Baheen said at a press conference.

Brown's visit to the war-torn country came a day after French President Nicolas Sarkozy came to Kabul after an attack on French soldiers killed 10 and wounded 21.

London  - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown delivered a sharp warning to Russia on Monday to end its military operations in the breakaway Georgian province of South Ossetia.

There was "no justification" for Russia's military offensive, Brown said in a statement released in London.

It is the "clear responsibility" of Moscow to agree to a ceasefire and to end the conflict immediately.

Brown said the situation "threatens the stability of the entire region and risks a humanitarian catastrophe."

Recalling his childhood days in the book, ‘When I was 10’, Brown revealed that he was highly fascinated by the stories of historic and sporting heroes.

"Like most boys of that age, I hadn''t travelled much and didn''t know much either. From my bedroom, or lying on the hearthrug in front of the fire, I went off on my travels again and again,” Telegraph quoted him, as stating in the book.
