Pak Army Chief Ashfaq Kayani satisfied with tribal support in chasing out militants

Pakistan Army Chief Gen Ashfaq KayaniRawalpindi, Sept 29: Pakistan Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Kayani has reportedly expressed satisfaction over the role of the local tribesmen in the Bajaur Agency in supporting his country’s Army in its fight against Al Qaeda and Taliban fighters.

In several incidents over the past weeks, the tribesmen in the Bajaur Agency have dragged the militants belonging to the Pakistan unit of the Taliban – the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) out of their areas. At times, the tribesmen also used weapons in chasing the terrorists away.

Condemning the bomb attack, the General said the Army stood with the Pakistani nation in its resolve to fight terrorism.

Kayani said that the US forces should show patience and desist from unilateral strikes on Pakistani soil, else it may prove “counter-productive”.

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza GilaniIslamabad, Aug 13 : Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that his country’s Army Chief Gen. Ashfaq Kayani was “highly professional and pro-democracy”, by not interfering into the process of impeachment of President Pervez Musharraf.

Gilani said this while speaking to reporters in response to a question about the role of the Pakistan Army in politics of the country.

“I want to assure you that COAS Gen Kayani is a highly professional officer and he is pro-democracy,” the Daily Times quoted Gilani as saying.

General Kayani has been frequently visiting Musharraf and the Prime Minister House since the February 18 elections.

CIA sees Pak Army chief Ashfaq Parvez Kayani as a ‘master manipulator’

Washington, July 21: In the eyes of the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani is a master manipulator.

A New York Times report says that American officials describe General Kayani “as a smart and urbane general, at once engaging and inscrutable, an avid golfer with occasionally odd affectations.”

At meetings, he is known to spend several minutes carefully hand-rolling a cigarette, and after taking one puff, stubs it out.

Most CIA veterans agree that relations between CIA and Pakistan’s ISI is like a bad marriage, in which both spouses have long stopped trusting each other but would never think of breaking up because they have become so mutually dependent.
