Pak PM calls Kayani a “professional and pro-democracy” Army Chief

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza GilaniIslamabad, Aug 13 : Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that his country’s Army Chief Gen. Ashfaq Kayani was “highly professional and pro-democracy”, by not interfering into the process of impeachment of President Pervez Musharraf.

Gilani said this while speaking to reporters in response to a question about the role of the Pakistan Army in politics of the country.

“I want to assure you that COAS Gen Kayani is a highly professional officer and he is pro-democracy,” the Daily Times quoted Gilani as saying.

The prime minister said that the government’s move to impeach Musharraf was part of “transition towards democracy”. “We are not against any person, but we are working according to the mandate given by the people,” he said.

Rejecting the speculation about US’ role, or any other western country, in the impeachment move, Gilani said that it was the people of Pakistan, the parliament and the elected representatives who took the decisions. (ANI)
