Pak Army Chief meets Pervez Musharraf, Yousuf Raza Gilani

IslamabadPakistan Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, July 26: Pakistan Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani held separate meetings with President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, before Gilani embarks upon his first official visit to the US.

General Kayani has been frequently visiting Musharraf and the Prime Minister House since the February 18 elections.

No official word was issued on these important meetings, though many say that the security environment with particular reference to the FATA situation and Gilani’s visit to the US were the two key issues that were discussed in these meetings.

General Kayani had met the President at the Bhurban Golf Course over “brunch” a few days back, and now his second call on the President has raised many eyebrows.

Recently, General Kayani along other military officials briefed the leaders of the coalition government on the security situation.

The meeting presided over by Gilani formulated the policy of resolving the FATA problem through dialogue and bringing the so-called military operation to a premature end, The News reported.

“Obviously, the joint announcement of the civil and military leadership in Pakistan (to end the military operation in FATA) would be a bitter pill to swallow for the Americans, who want action against the militants and extremists in Fata and other areas,” said a senior official.

General Kayani’s meetings with the President and the Prime Minister are also seen in the backdrop of strategic interests of the country and its military-to-military relations with the US. (ANI)
