Paes Resigns As Davis Cup Captain
Just over a month before the decisive World Group play-off match against Romania, Leander Paes has resigned as the captain of the Indian Davis Cup team on Tuesday.
The All-India Tennis Association (AITA) has named S.P. Misra for the World Group play-off in September against Romania. After losing the Olympics doubles tennis event in Beijing 35 year old Paes informed about his decision to AITA secretary general Anil Khanna.
It must be remembered here that players like Bhupathi and Amritraj had revolted against Paes before India’s previous Davis Cup tie against Japan in Delhi in April.
Since his debut in 1990 Paes has won 83 matches in singles and doubles against 31 losses for India. He is also the recipient of India's highest sporting honour, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 1996–1997 and the Padmashri award in 2001 for his contribution to Tennis in India.
However, Paes, Bhupathi, Somdev Dev Varman and Prakash Amritraj have been named for the tie against Romania next month.
