Ontario should have centralized adoption system
An expert panel appointed by Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty last summer presented various suggestions regarding infertility and adoption in the report titled “Raising Expectations.” The report was compiled on the basis of data from a year-long study.
The expert panel suggested there should be a centralized adoption agency rather than presently operating "patchwork" of adoption services. Due to lack of systematic adoption system the parents have to wait for years while there are 9,400 children a year waiting for adoption.
The expert panel asserted that government should fund fertility treatment as it was found that Ontarians often make poor choices in opting for services to help reproduce due to financial constrains. Data showed that one in six couples have infertility problems.
The report stated that as one cycle of IVF cost around $10,000, three cycles of in vitro fertilization for women under the age of 42 should be funded by the Ontario government. Due to lack of finances, couples often opt for transfer of more than one embryo leading to multiple births.
Panel chair David Johnston says: "This is just Ontario values. We want to be the best jurisdiction in the world in which to have a family."
