Father of green revolution remembered in US

Dr-Norman-BorlaugWashington, Aug 8 : Dr. Norman Borlaug, known as the "father of the green revolution", was remembered for "his great contributions to the advancement of agriculture and food production in India" at a function here.

"When you consider the achievements of Dr. Norman Borlaug, you realise that this is what legends are made of," said India's Ambassador to the US, Nirupama Rao at the event held Wednesday to mark the 50th anniversary of Borlaug's first visit to India.

42 percent Indian kids under five are underweight

Krishna-TirathNew Delhi, Aug 8 : A total of 42 percent children under five years of age in India are underweight. While in urban areas 32.7 percent were underweight, in rural India the corresponding figure was 45.6 percent, parliament was informed.

Giving this information in the Rajya Sabha, Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath said that around 35 percent of women in the age group of 15-49 years suffer from chronic energy deficiency (CED) which is measured as low body mass index.

CED in urban areas was present in 25 percent of women, and in rural areas it was present in 40.6 percent women.

Sharif upset over border clashes, calls for peace

Nawaz-SharifIslamabad, Aug 8 : Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Thursday expressed "sadness" over the border clashes in Kashmir, and said India and Pakistan must take "effective steps" to restore normalcy on the frontier.

Sharif told foreign ministry officials here that he was sad over the incidents involving Pakistani and Indian troops along the Line of Control (LoC) that divides Jammu and Kashmir between the two countries.

NTPC to make first overseas plant in Sri Lanka

NTPC to make first overseas plant in Sri LankaNew Delhi, Aug 8 : State-run generator NTPC will build a 500 MW thermal power plant in Sri Lanka in association with Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said Thursday.

In a written reply to parliament, the minister said a joint venture company, Trincomalee Power Co Ltd (TPCL), had been created for the project with 50:50 equity participation from NTPC and CEB.

The Sri Lankan Attorney General’s office recently approved NTPC's first overseas project proposed to be constructed at Sampur in the eastern district of Trincomalee.
