New Zealand lowers greenhouse gas emissions target

greenhouse-gas-emissionsWellington, Aug 16 : The New Zealand government Friday committed to a controversial greenhouse gas emissions target of five percent below 1990 levels by 2020, with critics claiming it had reneged on a higher commitment made in 2010.

"Our 2020 target is more ambitious than our Kyoto Protocol first commitment period target, compares favourably with our traditional partners' actions and reflects New Zealand's unique national circumstances," reported Xinhua qouting Tim Groser, climate change issues minister.

Myanmar posts trade surplus

trade-surplusYangon, Aug 16 : Myanmar posted a trade surplus of $8.65 million in July, official media quoted the Central Statistical Organisation as saying Friday.

With a total foreign trade of $1.586 billion, Myanmar's export amounted to $797.78 million, while its import stood at $789.13 million during the month, reported Xinhua.

However, in the first four months (April-July) of the 2013-14 fiscal year, Myanmar's foreign trade totalled $6.5 billion, of which export stood at $2.964 billion, while import represented $3.536 billion.
