India no longer a serious aviation safety risk

ICAONew Delhi, Aug 29 : The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has removed India from a list of countries with serious safety concerns (SSCs), a government official said Thursday.

The clean chit came after a three-member team of the global aviation regulator conducted a five-day audit of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) from August 19-23.

The audit team also validated the corrective action plan (CAP) prepared by the DGCA to adress the two specific SSCs raised by ICAO, including issues over DGCA's air operators certification process and absence of certifying modifications made to Indian aircraft abroad.

No proposal to subsidise power companies for coal imports: Scindia

Jyotiraditya-ScindiaNew Delhi, Aug 29 : The union government has no proposal before it to give subsidy to coal importing power generators nor hike power tariff to make electricity from imported coal more viable, Minister of State for Power Jyotiraditya Scindia said Thursday.

In a written reply in parliament, the minister said the higher cost of imported coal is to be considered for pass-through as per modalities suggested by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC).

Sri Lanka seeks equal treatment from UN

G-L-PeirisColombo, Aug 29 : Sri Lanka, under attack for human rights abuses, Thursday sought equal treatment from the UN for all countries.

External Affairs Minister G. L. Peiris said there was a perception in Sri Lanka about the lack of objectivity and fairness in the treatment meted out to Colombo, reports Xinhua.

The minister said Sri Lanka accepts constructive and justified criticism but resents vicious and baseless positions.

He made the comments when he met visiting UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, the foreign ministry said.

Centre selling off country for individual interests: Mamata

"To suit the interest of one or two countries, the country's economy is intentionally being weakened. While the whole country is concerned at the rapid fall of the rupee, why is UPA (United Progressive Alliance) silent," Banerjee asked mediapersons here.
