Amritsar kids observe Bhagat Singh's 100th birth anniversary a day earlier

Amritsar, Sept.26 :Children of the Ram Ashram School in Amritsar today celebrated the 100th birth anniversary of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, a day earlier than scheduled.

Holding placards and photographs of Bhagat Singh during the felicitation ceremony, the children inspired a feeling of patriotism through the gathering.

Harkirat Singh, a student, dressed up like Bhagat Singh for the occasion.

New multi-focal lenses may help restore vision to cataract patients

Washington, September 26 : An ophthalmologist at Weill Cornell Medical College has said that restoring vision to cataract patients may be possible by implanting them with the newly developed multi-focal lenses.

“There are no alternatives to surgery, but there are new advances to the restoration process. We have lenses that will allow you to see at a distance as well as read without glasses. There are lenses that can correct astigmatisms. The options have become much-improved in the past couple of years,” said Dr. Calvin Roberts.

Cricket(ers) takes a ‘back seat’ at Wankhede

Mumbai, Sept 26 : It was a ceremony meant to facilitate Team India for winning the Twenty20 World Championship, but cricket virtually took a ‘back seat’ at the Wankhede Stadium here today, as no cricketer except skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was given a seat in the front row at the dais.

At the event, organised to celebrate a purely sporting achievement, the first row on the stage was dominated by politicians and officials of the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI), even as the hoarding in the background ‘loudly’ said “Congratulations Team India.”

Israeli, Jordanian scientists grow artificial reefs to heal natural ones

Washington, Sept 26 : Israeli and Jordanian scientists have constructed a string of artificial coral reefs in the Red Sea with the aim of weaning away divers and snorkelers from natural reefs, allowing them time to heal.

A high diversity of corals thrive in the Gulf of Aqaba, which lies at the northern end of the Red Sea and is bordered by Israel and Jordan, and Egypt and Saudia Arabia farther south.

These reefs draw tourists from around the world to the neigh boring resort cities of Elat, Israel, and Al 'Aqabah, Jordan.

Orphanages in Pune keep video records of their children

Pune (Maharashtra), Sep 26 : The Society of Friends of Sassoon Hospital (SOFOSH) and Bhartiya Samaj Seva Kendra (BSSK), the two orphanages in Pune, have come up with a novel way of maintaining records of their children by using video technology.

The videos of the orphans would be saved in compact discs (CD) and will contain detailed information about the infants, which will be help to those who adopt them.

The CDs will trace the growth of a child from their first day in the orphanage.
