ISRO to launch Chandrayaan-I moon mission on April 9, 2008

Bangalore, Sept.27 : The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch its maiden mission to the moon, Chandrayaan-I, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota on April 9, 2008.

"We are looking for a launch on April nine," Mylswamy Annadurai, Project Director of Chandrayaan-I, said, adding that a launch windows are available for the next two days in case the launch does not happen on that day.

Arjun Singh to flag off `Azadi Express' on Friday

New Delhi, Sept.27 : Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh will flag off the "Azadi Express" - the Mobile Train Exhibition, on Friday.

The mobile exhibition, which celebrates the 150th anniversary of the 1857 uprising, the 60 years of India's independence from British colonial rule and the birth centenary of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, will begin its journey from New Delhi.

Yousuf to leave ICL to play for Pakistan

Lahore, Sept 27 : Pakistani batsman Mohammad Yousuf today agreed to cancel his contract with the Indian Cricket League (ICL) in order to continue playing for his national team.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Nasim Ashraf said that he had a “fruitful meeting” with Yousuf today, during which the prolific batsman signed a central contract with the board.

"He is now available to represent Pakistan. He is the backbone of Pakistan's batting, and we are happy that he is back,” Ashraf said.

Radical plan calls for placing giant tubes in ocean to combat global warming

Washington, Sept 27 : A team of two British scientists have conceptualised a radical plan that calls for placing giant pumps in the ocean to pump up cold, nutrient-rich water from deep below, encouraging surface algae to bloom and suck carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

James Lovelock and Chris Rapley claim that such climate engineering solutions might be the only way to hold global warming at bay given its current progress.

BCCI VP Shashank Manohar set to take over from Pawar

New Delhi, Sept 27 : The Vice President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Shashank Manohar, is all set to take over the board President’s job from incumbent Sharad Pawar in mid 2008.

Reports said that Manohar has been recommended to take over from Pawar after the latter assumes charge as the Vice-President of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in July 2008.

100 ancient sites identified at Seimareh Dam reservoir in western Iran

Tehran, Sept 27 : Iranian archaeologists have identified 100 ancient sites at the Seimareh Dam reservoir in the country’s western Ilam Province.

The sites have been identified as belonging to Neolithic, Bronze Age, Copper Age, Stone Age, Parthian, Sassanid, and early Islamic eras, said team director Rasul Seyyedin Borujeni.
