Plucking hair triggers more hair growth

According to a US study, plucking hair in a specific pattern can lead to growth of more hair. Altering the density of hair removed changed the number of hair that grew again.

In the study, the team regenerated 1,300 hairs by plucking 200. The study has been published in Cell journal. According to experts, it was 'really nice science', but it is not clear that whether this could be a treatment for human baldness. By the age of 50, half of men have male-pattern baldness.

The team at the University of Southern California was studying how hair follicles interact with each other to choose the scale of repair job required. The researchers removed 200 hair follicles from a circular patch of skin in mice in a series of experiments.

Brain Scan could help understand Language Problems in Autistic Kids

According to researchers at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, a brain scan can predict a child’s future language development after the child is known to be suffering from autism spectrum disorder. Published in the online edition of the journal Neuron, the study has established a strong relationship between irregularities in speech activation of the temporal cortex area of the brain and actual language ability in toddlers with autism spectrum disorder.

“We wanted to see if patterns of brain activity in response to language can explain and predict how well language skills would develop in a toddler with ASD before that toddler actually began talking”, said Eric Courchesne, a professor of neurosciences and co-director of the Autism Center of Excellence at UCSD.

Scientists could Establish Contact with Alien Life within 20 to 30 Years

Researchers at NASA have revealed that it is highly possible to make contact with alien life in near future. Ellen Stofan, chief scientist of NASA, said in a public event organized by the US space agency at its headquarters in Washington that chances are high that they get strong indications of life beyond earth within a decade. The evidence for it, according to Stofan, will be available to them within 20 to 30 years.

"We know where to look. We know how to look. In most cases we have the technology, and we're on a path to implementing it. And so I think we're definitely on the road", Stofan added.

Jeffery Newmark, acting director of heliophysics at NASA, said that the question is about 'when' rather than 'if'.

Scientists keeping close watch on Debris Boat off Oregon Coast

Local officials and scientists are keeping a close watch on a large chunk of fiberglass just off the Oregon coast that seems to be from a boat that might be part of the tsunami debris from the Japanese earthquake of 2011.

According to Chris Havel, a spokesman for the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD), the object was spotted just west of Ona Beach near Seal Rock and Newport and it is about 30 feet long.

Havel said that a team of state agencies are getting ready in order to retrieve the debris from the ocean. Some fish native to waters of Japan is found living on the object, involving one still alive. As per the officials, there were also a variety of yellowtail jack fish, and other sea life that clings to boats and debris.
