Wellington - The United Nations has given comfort and a financing to Fiji's military dictator by using the Pacific island state's soldiers as peacekeepers, New Zealand's foreign minister said Thursday.

Murray McCully said former secretary-general Kofi Annan had warned Voreque Bainimarama in 2006 that the UN would stop using Fijian soldiers in peacekeeping operations if he carried out his threat to oust the elected government.
