Half of US Population with High Cholesterol Not Taking Medication: Study

A new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has revealed that almost half of the US population that are at high risk of getting heart attack due to increased level of cholesterol do not take proper medications to lower the risk.

According to experts, high cholesterol is linked to strong risk of getting cardiovascular disease, which is responsible for one in three deaths in the United States. The gaps observed by the CDC in the cholesterol treatment were far higher among minorities in the United States than among white Americans.

Scientists Report High Levels of Radiations from Fukushima Nuclear Accident off West Coast

A team of scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on Thursday reported that they have detected higher levels of radiation linked to the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident.

Researchers said they have so far sampled a number of sites and those sites are showing signs of contamination.

Ken Buesseler, the Woods Hole scientist who was the first to begin monitoring radiation in the Pacific after the accident, said in a statement that their recent findings have a crucial importance.

Firstly he said although the levels of radiations detected are far below government-established safety limits for human health or to marine life, their presence suggests that there is high need for closely monitoring the levels of contamination.

Climate Change Forcing Pacific Islanders to Migrate

Climate change is causing huge damage to our environment and is resulting in warming up of earth. Now a recent survey has shown that sea level rise caused due to climate change has forced people living in low-lying Pacific islands to migrate.

People of these areas are now asking that they are in high need of refugee asylum after climate change resulted in sea level rise. Although several people have associated ‘refugee crisis’ with the current tensions in Syria, natives of Kiribati, Tuvalu, and Nauru said that irreversible effects of climate change are forcing them to leave their homes and move to other distant places.

Study suggests non-genetic factors like diet can be passed down through sperm

Generally, experts tell women to maintain healthy lifestyle habits to boost the probability of conception and protect the health of a future baby. But a latest study has suggested that men looking forward to become fathers must also consider cleaning up their diet and increase physical activity for better health outcomes of a baby, even prior to conception.

Published on Thursday, in Cell Metabolism, the study carried out a comparison between biomarkers in the sperm of obese men and men, who were fit. The results have offered an indication into why kids of obese fathers have more chances to be obese themselves. They have suggested that non-genetic factors such as diet can be passed down via sperm.

Study Explains How Ordinary Matter Makes Up Less Than 5% of Universe

So far it has been known that ordinary matter makes up only 5% of the universe or whatever we know. But almost half of this percentage still remains unknown. Now a new study has shown that majority of the missing ordinary matter is found in the form of a very hot gas associated with intergalactic filaments.

The team led by a researcher from University of Geneva (UNIGE), Switzerland, claims that they observed the phenomenon directly. The study’s findings have showed that the majority of the undetected ordinary matter is found in the form of immensely hot gases that are associated with intergalactic filaments.

According to researchers whose findings were published in the journal Nature, galaxies are formed when an ordinary matter collides and then gets cooled.

SpaceX to Attempt Landing of Discarded Rocket on Dry Land

SpaceX, the American Aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company for the first time will be attempting to safely land a discarded rocket on earth. The landing will take place on dry land, said company experts.

The company owned by Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously aimed to land the used rockets on a floating platform, but its attempt ended into a failure. This time Falcon 9 will be launch again from the Cape Canaveral base, but the date of the launch has not been specified yet.

“If successful, it would mark not only the first successful landing and recovery of the company’s flagship rocket, but also the first terrestrial rocket landing for SpaceX after two failed landing attempts at sea”, reported Fortune.
