A team of researchers from Virginia Tech and New Mexico State University carried out a study to assess the resistance that bedbugs have developed against the most widely used pesticides to destroy them. The study reveals that killing bedbugs might just have become tougher than before. The outcomes from the paper ‘High Levels of Resistance in the Common Bed Bug, Cimex lectularius (Hemiptera: Cimicidae), to Neonicotinoid Insecticides’ appeared in the Journal of Medical Entomology.

A new treatment for hepatitis C, Zepatier, has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Merck & Co. announced in a statement. After this, the company’s new drug will be the latest to hit the drug market dominated by Gilead Sciences.

Once-daily drug Zepatier is a combination of grazoprevir and elbasvir. The FDA has approved the drug in the US as a treatment of the most common type of hepatitis C, Merck added. Americans with genotype 1 and genotype 4 will take the pill as a treatment.

Packed salads infested with Listeria, made at a Dole processing facility in Ohio, killed a person and hospitalized almost 15 people since July in many parts of the United States. Listeria is the bacterium that causes listeriosis, an infection that affects the gastrointestinal tract.

This infection can cause temporary problems such as high fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea, headaches, stiffness and nausea and can cause death if gets serious. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has ceased the Dole facility last week and voluntarily recalled all salad mixes.

Women taking antidepressants during their reproductive stage have to think twice before taking prescribed medications. According to a report issued by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 15% of women in their reproductive years take antidepressants; this could lead to rare birth defects in the heart, brain and other organs of children born to them. The CDC recommends doctors to screen pregnant women, new mothers as well as all adults for depression.

Depression is a common psychological disease that affects about 30% of women between 18 and 44 years of age and if it is not treated, patients can suffer from more mental health problems and risk of heart disease and other conditions. Similar defects could be found in children born to such mothers.

On Thursday, health officials said that about 400 people have recently reported falling ill after dining at a suburban Kansas City dinner theater, and some of them have even tested positive for norovirus.

In a news release, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment said that the diners who fell sick had consumed food at the New Theatre Restaurant in Overland Park, Kansas since January 15.

Health officials said that laboratory tests have confirmed that four people who got ill had norovirus, which generally leads to stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea.

If we talk about the health implications solely, new estimates produced for the report have significantly scaled up breast-feeding to near-universal levels for new-born children and young children, which might save 820,000 children's lives per year worldwide, preventing 13% of all deaths of children below five.
