Reducing Carbon Emission could Prevent Thousands of Deaths in US By 2030

In 2013, CO2 accounted for more than 80% of all US greenhouse gas emissions due to human activity, according to United States environment protection agency (EPA). Air pollution is associated with high number of deaths from respiratory complications. Cutting down carbon emissions will not only favor our environment, but also health of masses.

EPA stated that carbon dioxide is the primary greenhouse gas emitted through human activity. A new study was conducted by researchers at Duke University and the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies to investigate impacts of polluted air on mortality rate. The findings of the study were published in Nature Climate Change on Monday.

New Study explains how Drought-like Conditions are affecting all US Forests

Not just California, but all forests in the United States are at risk of facing catastrophic effects of climate change, a new study published in journal Global Change Biology has predicted. Change in weather pattern is happening rapidly, and forests don’t have time to react, as per the study.

Researchers from over one dozen institutions said that rising instances of drought-like conditions, which were previously found affecting only Western forests, have now started impacting nearly all forests and cities across the country. Climate models created by ecologists and researchers are suggesting that drought may become more severe and prolonged in most of the states in the US.

Gorilla escapes from its container on ISS and chases Tim Peake

On Tuesday, a gorilla ran away from its container on the International Space Station (ISS). It chased European astronaut Tim Peake across the orbiting laboratory.

Some might think it is a plot of an upcoming science fiction flick or next sequel to ‘Planet of the Apes,' but it has really happened. However, the ‘ape’ was astronaut Scott Kelly attired in a gift from his twin brother Mark Kelly that he received on the previous cargo resupply mission.

A video featured Peake apparently unloading the soft cargo container unknown of the fact that Kelly is inside and strapping it down, as an astronaut does at the time of zero gravity, and then moves out. Kelly comes out of the container, reappearing as if is flying after Peake around the Space Station.

SES wants to buy used Falcon 9 rocket from SpaceX for a future launch

On Tuesday, the chief technology officer for SES said that satellite operator SES SA is willing to purchase a used Falcon 9 rocket from Elon Musk’s SpaceX for a future launch.

At a pre-launch news conference, SES’s Martin Halliwell told reporters that SES has no issue in flying a re-used (rocket’s) first stage. Halliwell also said that they are happy until it is flight-worthy.

SpaceX is looking forward to fly a 12,613-pound SES satellite, hopefully on Wednesday, at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

Halliwell said that so far the Luxembourg-based SES and SpaceX haven’t negotiated the launch price of a used Falcon rocket. The company's website showed that SpaceX’s new Falcon 9 rockets cost about $61 million.

Sea levels on Earth are rising due to human activity led global warming: Studies

New studies suggest that sea levels on Earth have been rising at a much faster speed than they have in the last about 2,800 years. According to the studies conducted in the past, the acceleration is due to global warming caused due to human activity and not only natural phenomenon.

An international group of scientists dug into two dozen sites globally to note down the rising and falling seas over a long period.

The fastest sea level rise was nearly 1 to 1.5 inches in 100 years, until the 1880s and the world’s industrialization. At that time, global sea level didn’t become much higher or lower than 3 inches above or below the 2,000-year average.

Massive fireball falls in South Atlantic Ocean earlier this month

A massive fireball dropped over the southern Atlantic Ocean on February 6 but remained unnoticed. The fireball probably exploded roughly 30 kilometers over the ocean, and surprisingly, no one noticed it except for NASA engineers.

The fireball is supposedly the biggest one ever to hit the Earth since February 2013’s Chelyabinsk explosion. The incident took place at around 9 am off the coast of Brazil. The fireball was packed with energy equal to 13,000 tons of TNT. In comparison, the Chelyabinsk explosion brimmed with a groundbreaking energy of 500,000 tons when it crossed the skies of Ural Mountains.
