Nirupama Rao concludes Dharamsala visit

Nirupama RaoDharamsala, July 11 : Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao Sunday flew back to Delhi after holding talks with the Dalai Lama here, an official said. There was no indication of the nature of the talks or its timing.

"Rao and the official (Gautam Bambawale, joint secretary, East Asia, in the external affairs ministry) accompanying her went back to Delhi," Superintendent of Police Atul Fulzele told IANS.

Rao met the Dalai Lama as well as other high-ranking officials of the Tibetan government-in-exile, including prime minister Samdhong Rinpoche, here Saturday afternoon.

'India losing satellites due to failure of imported components'

Indian Space Research OrganisationChennai, July 11 (IANS) Even as Indian space scientists are working on the partial restoration of communications satellite INSAT-4B, they are worried because of the recurring failure of their satellites due to power supply glitches.

The reason may be the failure of imported components, according to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientists.

ISRO has lost two of its satellites earlier -- Chandrayaan in 2009 and INSAT-2D in 1997 -- and INSAT-4B partially now.

Play Marathi songs on FM channels: MNS

FM channelsMumbai, July 11 : The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Sunday endorsed the views of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray and said Marathi songs should be played on private FM radio channels in the state.

"Bal Thackeray has rightly taken up this sensitive and urgent issue which is of great relevance to all the Marathi lovers in the state. The channels that air in Maharashtra should give equal importance to Marathi and Hindi songs," MNS vice president V. Saraswat told IANS.

Thackeray Saturday asked private FM radio channels to broadcast Marathi songs within a week or "face a Sena-style agitation".

11 policemen, district governor killed in Afghanistan

AfghanistanKunduz (Afghanistan), July 11 : A district governor was killed by a roadside bomb in northern Afghanistan where two separate insurgent attacks killed at least 11 policemen, officials said Sunday.

Maalem Aziz, administrative chief of Qaleh Zal district in Kunduz province, was killed Saturday night when his vehicle was struck by a bomb in Pangark area, Mohammad Omar, the provincial governor, said.

Aziz's driver was also killed in the blast, while his son and bodyguard were injured, Omar said.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid took responsibility for the attack.

Nepal asks India to lift 1,000-rupee note ban

NepalKathmandu, July 11:  Less than a fortnight after an Indian minister was detained in Nepal for carrying banned Indian currency notes, Nepal has reiterated its call to India's banking transaction regulator to lift the prohibition.

Yubaraj Khatiwada, governor of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the republic's apex bank, has asked Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor D. Subbarao to lift the RBI ban on Rs.1,000 and Rs.500 Indian rupee notes in Nepal.

The ban came into effect more than a decade ago after a growing racket in fake Indian currency as well as suspected routing of money to fund terrorist activities through Nepal.
