BJP reaffirms commitment to re-enact POTA

L K AdvaniNew Delhi, Oct 4 : Bharatiya Janata Party senior leader L. K. Advani on Saturday said that his party was committed to re-enact Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) and make the country terror free.

He was addressing a seminar on ''War on Terrorism'' in New Delhi today.

Advani claimed that the main difference between the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and BJP was that while the former was only playing vote bank politics, the latter was actually concerned about the interest of the country.

He also called the present government a “non-Government” as it had completely failed to curb terrorism.

“We are committed to making India terror free. We will re-enact POTA and now that these statements have been made even from within the Congress party. I hope that when a law for re-enacting POTA is brought in the Parliament. I hope the Congress will also support it and there is no need for a joint session,” said Advani.

Referring to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Advani said that terrorism would be the most important issue on the election agenda.

“As far as the Lok Sabha elections are concerned, terrorism and price rise are the two most important issues for elections but as far as India''s unity and sovereignty are concerned, getting rid of terrorism is India''s prime responsibility,” said Advani.

India has witnessed a spate of serial blasts during the past few months claiming hundreds of innocent lives and leaving hundreds others maimed.

The failure to prevent such attacks has become an embarrassment for the Congress party-led coalition government, with general elections almost round the corner.

Police have blamed the banned Students'' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) for most attacks in recent years, and accuse neighbouring Pakistan and Bangladesh of imparting training and providing support to local SIMI cadres. (ANI)
